Ride1Up recently retired their popular 500 Series electric bike and has replaced in with a new model called the Turris. We’ll be taking a close look at it and seeing what type of rider the bike is for. Rad Power Bikes has teased the release of a new ebike to be revealed on March 1st, but I’ve seen leaked photos. It’s not a new model, but a refreshed version of one of their most popular models. I won’t share more than that, but if you’re considering purchasing a Rad Power Bike before March 1st 2023, you might want to wait a few days.

Ride1Up Turris

Ride1Up is marketing the new Turris as a great “starter” electric bike, which is a little odd considering their affordable Core 5 is also marketed as a starter ebike. The Turris is upgraded from the Core 5 in that it has a hydraulic suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, fenders, and slightly wider 27.5″ x 2.4″ tires. The Core 5 has a rigid fork, mechanical disc brakes, no fenders, and 27.5″ x 2.2″ tires. So, for about $250 more you can have the Turris with front suspension, hydraulic brakes, and a more comfortable ride with fenders to keep you dry. Seems like a good deal to me, unless you’re wanting a lighter ebike for a little lower price.

The front suspension and fenders adds some weight to the Turris with it coming in at about 55 lbs compared to 49 lbs for the Core 5. Both are Class 3 ebikes, meaning they can reach speeds of up to 28 mph using pedal assist. They both have a throttle with a max speed of 20 mph to comply with regulations. Both are 7-speed with an 12-32 tooth cassette for a good spread of gears. They also both have 48-volt 12.8 Ah batteries for decent range, though many ebikes are shipping with larger batteries these days.

Still, priced at $1295 the Turris offers quite a bit for the money. It’s almost unheard of to find an ebike with hydraulic brakes, let alone a hydraulic fork, for anywhere near $1295.

The Turris is available in two frame styles, a step-over and step-thru frame, both offered in three different colors. Ride1Up offers accessories for the Turris including a front rack, rear rack, and front basket. You can also purchase accessories for the Core 5 through Ride1Up or third-party retailers.

Turris Promotional Sheet

The Turris looks to be a cruising machine that can do some off-roading thanks to its front suspension and wide tires. If you choose the step-thru frame, it comes with swept back handlebars for added comfort and a more upright riding position. If you go with the step-over frame, it will come with a riser bar for better control off-road, or just a more sporty riding stance.

I think the Turris is a good replacement for the 500 Series and is a great choice for someone wanting a multipurpose ebike that will be at home on both pavement and gravel. The price is fantastic for what you’re getting. I’m sure I’ll be writing more about the Turris in the future.
