Announced just a few days ago is the Huami Amazfit Stratos GPS Sports Watch.  Touted as a premium smartwatch, it features some impressive specs and an attractive design.

Just a few weeks ago, I reviewed the Amafit Bip, which is a budget-friendly multi-sport GPS watch with always-on display (that looks really nice), on board GPS+GLONASS, and decent fitness tracking abilities.  The greatest feature of the Bip is its 30+ day battery life.  Read my full review on the Bip here.

The Stratos costs twice as much as the Bip but offers a more premium build quality and VO2 max estimates to determine your level of aerobic physical fitness, along with estimates for exercise load and recovery time.

Like the Bip, the Stratos has that very efficient transflective color display for a bright and very readable screen in even the brightest sunlight.  Actually, the brighter the sunlight, the better the display is.

The Stratus doesn’t have the 30-45 day battery life but it still has a respectable 5-day battery life..

The watch case is constructed of carbon fiber while the bezel is made of ceramic.  The screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass which is scratch resistant.  The screen is touch display but there are also 3 stainless steel buttons for navigating through the watch’s menus.

Activities the Amazfit Stratos supports are: running, walking, cycling, swimming, elliptical machine (nice! I haven’t seen this supported on many watches), mountaineering, trail running, triathlon, tennis, soccer, and skiing.

The watch also syncs with Strava, a popular mobile fitness app.

From its pictures, this looks to be a very good looking watch at a size that should fit nearly any size wrist.  The display size is 1.34″ and the watch weighs in at 2.5 oz or 70 grams.

The Stratos also supports music storage.

Other notable features:

  • stopwatch
  • compass
  • alarm
  • weather forecasts
  • supports metric and imperial units
  • supports 12h and 24 hour time formats
  • 4 GB of storage
  • barometer to estimate elevation
  • 5 ATM (50 meters) water resistance

This is one watch I will certainly be taking a closer look at.  It’s currently priced at $199 on Amazfit’s website so I think it’s priced competitively considering its features and build quality.
