We’re learning of new 2023 electric bike models from three of the most popular ebike companies in the United States. Rad Power Bikes announced their latest model, a new trike a few weeks ago, and now we have details of the new trike coming from Lectric Ebikes. Ride1Up is still being mysterious about their newest offering, but it looks like they’re entering the popular fat tire ebike market with an aggressive looking model.
Rad Power Bikes RadTrike
Rad Power Bikes recently launched their RadTrike, their first 3-wheeled ebike marketed towards consumers. It is priced at $2499, which makes it their most expensive ebike yet. So far, reviews have been positive from those who have been able to take it on a test ride.
Unique to the RadTrike are 18-inch wheels, which lower the bike and provide greater stability and a very low step-over height. It also has a reverse function, which is handy for a trike loaded down with cargo. It looks like Rad really tried to make this an approachable etrike for those who might not be able to ride a regular ebike so easily.
Lectric XP Trike
Not to be outdone, Lectric Ebikes has also posted details of their first trike called the XP Trike. Unique features for the XP Trike are that it is folding, is equipped with a 1092-watt peak rear motor, and it’s two-wheeled drive. The dual differential axle of the XP Trike means that each rear tire can spin at different rates. Lectric claims that this makes the bike more stable and capable when turning.
Trikes have the reputation for not being so stable when turning. The RadTrike has smaller wheels to help reduce the possibility of tipping, while Lectric has approached this problem differently, with a differential axle. It remains to be seen which one works better.
The price of the XP Trike blows me away. It can be preordered beginning February 7th for just $1499. I’m not sure if this is just an introductory price, but it’s a great price considering it has hydraulic brakes, a 48 volt 14 amp hour battery, a full LCD display, a more sophisticated drive system, and integrated front and rear lights. It’s also very reminiscent of other Lectric bikes. In other words, it’s not dorky looking. :)
The XP Trike also folds, which means it can more easily be hauled inside a vehicle. I’m impressed that it weighs just 64 pounds without the battery. That’s remarkable considering it has three wheels.
Unlike the RadTrike running 18-inch by 2.25-inch tires, the XP Trike is equipped with 20-inch by 2.6-inch tires. Both trikes are single-speed and have a top speed of 14 MPH for safety. Trikes aren’t built for speed. Instead, they are meant for hauling cargo.
Considering the XP Trike is $1000 less than the RadTrike, it seems like a no-brainer which one is the better value on paper. Of course, the real test is on the road. We’ll have to wait and see what the riding performance is of both, but until then, I have to give the nod to Lectric. New Fat Tire Bike from Ride1Up
I’m always interested in new models from Ride1Up because I’ve always been pleased with their ebikes. Their models are typically equipped with better components than other ebikes offered for the same price. The owners are also fans of the traditional bike riding experience, so they’re good at picking out the right mix of components on their models, instead of just slapping on mediocre or inferior parts without regard to the bike’s performance. So far, the Ride1Up Prodigy, their mid-drive model, is my favorite pedaling ebike of all time. If you’re a pedaling enthusiast, especially coming from a gravel bike background, you’ll love it!
On the other end of the spectrum, if you love riding more with a throttle on something more zippy, then it looks like Ride1Up is going to be offering that too with their new model. Moped style ebikes are a lot of fun, and yet remain practical for daily commutes. If it is moped style, I hope it has an adjustable seat for different rider heights and proper leg extension. That’s where a lot of moped style ebikes fall flat.
While we don’t have any concrete details about the new model yet, we can tell from the teaser video posted on YouTube, that it’s aiming to be more aggressive. At least that’s the impression I get.
I’m just not sure if it’s going to be in the spirit of a Lectric XP or Super73, but I can’t wait to find out.
