Mid-Summer Break and a DIY Project

As I wrote several months ago about my attempt to bring a little craftsman style to our fireplace.  For my first attempt at carpentry it turned out pretty good.  It’s still standing!  Now I’m going to be tackling another home improvement project.

In 2011, we added 720 square feet of living space onto our then tiny 900 square feet house and while it was a crazy summer dealing with every home remodeling issue imaginable it was well worth it.  I don’t know how we lived in such a tiny house for so many years but I wouldn’t want to do it again.

In adding on that square footage, new entrances had to be created in the walls and they still haven’t been cased out in wood trim.

Boy, this hallway looks creepy in these photos.  Too bad a didn’t capture the black, hunched over demon looking thing we’ve seen in there before.

So now I’m going to tackle that job by trying to replicate  craftsman style door casings.  I can’t go all out fancy because it would look silly in a house that was built to be a utilitarian box for habitation, a.k.a, a ranch style home.

The casing needs to look like it belongs in the house so it’ll have to be toned down a bit.  That will also save on costs.  Since we installed prefinished oak trim in the new addition I’m going to have to use it here to tie in the same look. I’m not going to be able to use cheap pine boards and paint them, even though I think I like the painted look better.

But I’m not going to be the one to paint over oak.  Only a knucklehead would do that.

So, this is my project over the 4th of July week while I take some time off from the blog.  Wish me luck on using those beginner carpentry skills again!
